A diagnosis of cancer can be devastating. And high up in the things that will worry most people is the fear of the sickness that may come with chemotherapy. Some of the sickness is of course caused by the chemotherapy drugs used. Thankfully, this sickness can be improved by the use of anti-emetic drugs. However, some people will suffer from anticipatory nausea and vomiting – just the smell of the hospital can be enough to cause the vomiting, and unfortunately this does not respond to anti-emetic drugs. It does, however, respond to hypnotherapy, which can make the whole chemotherapy process far less unpleasant.
Hypnotherapy can also help with needle phobia – this is sometimes a primary phobia, but can often be developed as a secondary phobia as a result of chemotherapy treatment. Similarly, problems with the swallowing of medication can also develop, and this, as well as the needle phobia, responds very well to hypnotherapy.
